An Island Kayaking Adventure in Howe Sound

Snug Cove, on Bowen Island, is uniquely placed as a launch point to explore Howe Sound.  On this kayaking tour we paddle North, enjoying the spectacular views of the snow capped North Shore mountains, before reaching a quiet beach for lunch with views all the way up to Squamish and Black Tusk.  After lunch, your guide will take you across the channel to Bowyer Island before sweeping south back to Snug Cove.  This island kayaking adventure makes for a memorable Vancouver getaway.

Howe Sound Explorer Tour details

Howe Sound is the southernmost fjord in North America, with majestic mountains rising next to deep ocean channels.  Carved out by glacial ice thousands of years ago, the waters of Howe Sound can present challenging kayaking conditions.  This full day tour is intended for intermediate paddlers.

Please meet your guide at the kayak shop in Snug Cove, around 15 minutes before your tour start time.   For beginner paddlers, consider starting with a 3-hour <link Shoreline tour>.

After fitting you in your Personal Floatation Device, our launch takes place directly from the dock in Snug Cove. We start the tour with an assessment of the conditions, sharing with you our expertise in kayaking in these waters.  We will then make sure that you are comfortable and confident in your kayak before launching. Our paddler to guide ratio is 6:1, we keep our tour small for your safety on and off the water.  Your guide will be happy to share some paddling tips during the day to enhance your trip. They are always on the lookout for amazing wildlife to enjoy with you.

This tour is aimed at guests with previous kayaking experience, it is suitable for adults and teenagers.  Advance reservations are required.  Remember sunscreen, a sunhat, plenty of water to drink and something to eat for lunch.  There are great options to buy lunch immediately next to the kayak shop if you prefer.

Where we will paddle on our Kayaking Tour

After our safety briefing, we will launch and head North, following into Mannion Bay where the seals hang out. During early season a colony of sea lions hangs out here, keeping our distance we will pay them a visit.  Next we will paddle out of Mannion bay, rounding Miller’s Landing where the view opens up to the North.

We will follow the coastline past Scarborough beach and Eaglecliff eventually arriving at Cates Bay and Finisterre.  After taking a peek to the West around Finisterre we will make a decision where lunch will be.  If conditions allow, we will cross to Bowyer Island for lunch, if not Smuggler’s Cove will mark our lunch spot.

Both lunch destinations have spectacular views for you to enjoy.  After lunch we will head south either retracing our earlier route, or via the foot of the North Shore Mountains.  Keep your eyes peeled for signs of whales, we have seen a significant number of whales in the last season.  We will have you back at the dock in Snug Cove by 4pm, here your guide will share photos of your day.

Wind Substitution

In the event of strong northerly or southerly winds, your guide may choose to substitute the Pasley Island Discovery Tour.
